Numerical Analysis of Directionally Unstable Crack Propagation in Adhesively Bonded Joints

چکیده

This paper investigates the directional stability of crack propagation in adhesively bonded joints. First, an analytical model analyzing the energy balance during the crack propagation in double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens is presented, and the directional stability of cracks is predicted. The results are consistent with the analytical predictions made by Fleck, Hutchinson, and Suo [1] using a stress analysis approach, and also are consistent with experimental observations. Similar to the situation in homogeneous solids, cracks in adhesively bonded joints also tend to be directionally unstable when the T-stress is positive (tensile) whereas tend to be directionally stable when the T-stress is negative (compressive). Both interface mechanics and the finite element method are then employed to analyze the stress state at the crack tip and to predict crack trajectories. Through extending the criteria for direction of cracking to bi-material systems, the trajectory for directionally unstable cracks is simulated. The simulation results accurately reflect the alternating nature of directionally unstable cracks in adhesive bonds such as the characteristic length and the overall shape of the crack.

Crack Path Selection in Adhesively Bonded Joints: the Roles of External Loads and Specimen Geometry

This paper investigates the roles of external loads and specimen geometry on crack path selection in adhesively bonded joints. Modelling the Fracture Behaviour of Adhesively-bonded Joints as a Function of Test Rate

Tapered-double cantilever-beam joints were manufactured from aluminium-alloy substrates bonded together using a single-part, rubber-toughened, epoxy adhesive. The mode I fracture behaviour of the joints was investigated as a function of loading rate by conducting a series of tests at crosshead speeds ranging from 3.33 x10 m/s to 13.5 m/s. Unstable, (i.e. stick-slip crack) growth behaviour was o...

Rate Effects for Mixed-Mode Fracture of Plastically Deforming, Adhesively-Bonded Structures

Mixed-mode fracture of an adhesively-bonded structure made from a commercial adhesive and a dual-phase steel has been studied under different rates. Since mixedmode fracture occurs along the interface between the steel and adhesive, the cohesiveparameters for the interface were required. The mode-II interfacial properties were deduced in earlier work. In this paper the mode-I interfacial toughn...

Viscoelastic analysis of stress distribution in balanced and unbalanced adhesively bonded single-lap joints with functionally graded adherends under the Reddy model

In this study, shear and peel stress distributions in the viscoelastic adhesive layer of a single-lap joint (SLJ) with functionally graded (FG) adherends are investigated. The study focuses on the effect of different adherend profiles and material composition on the time-dependent stress concentration/distribution in balanced and unbalanced SLJs. For this purpose, the Reddy model is applied to ...
